A barricaded man who police say killed one trooper is still holding authorities at bay Tuesday afternoon, Local 4 reported.
The standoff began more than 36 hours ago at a home in Fremont -- about 30 miles northeast of Muskegon.
Kevin M. Marshall, 33, of the Newaygo Post, was fatally shot early Monday morning at the residence in Newaygo County, according to state police. Police said officers from the Hesperia Police Department and Newaygo County Sheriff’s Department attempted to serve a felony warrant for criminal sexual conduct on the man who barricaded himself in the home.
Marshall grew up in Sterling Heights, and residents in the community who remembered him were shocked to hear of his death, Local 4 reported. Marshall graduated from Sterling Heights High School and Wayne State University. Neighbors said he was active in sports as a child and had always wanted to be in law enforcement.
"(He was) very dedicated to his family, and I know this is going to be very hard on everyone,” said Betty Riydel, a neighbor.
His parents, who still live in the Sterling Heights home where Marshall grew up, apparently rushed to the western part of the state to be with their daughter-in-law and two grandchildren after hearing the tragic news, Local 4 reported.
Marhsall received a Michigan State Police bravery award in May.
He is the 49th Michigan State Police trooper to die in the line of duty.
