COWETA COUNTY, Ga. — An off-duty Coweta County deputy was shot and killed Tuesday night after a fight with a family member, authorities told Channel 2 Action News.
The deadly shooting involving the 26-year-old deputy occurred inside a home on Snowfall Terrace in Palmetto, the news station reported. While his name has not been released, Coweta County Sheriff Lenn Wood told Channel 2 that the man has worked for his office for several years, first in the county jail and recently out in the field.
Wood said the deputy and the relative “evidently had an argument about something. They were at the back of the house, and another family in the house heard the shots and saw him run out.”
Palmetto police officers responding to the scene identified the victim as a deputy, triggering a massive manhunt. Officers with assault weapons set up a roadblock and searched vehicles looking for the alleged shooter.
The family member was tracked down five miles from the scene on Collingsworth Road near I-85, Channel 2 reported. The suspect’s name has not been released.
“When he saw us there, he turned himself in to us,” Wood said.
Early Wednesday morning, a GBI crime scene truck and several agents were on the scene. The state agency is leading the investigation, according to to the news station.
