TUCSON, Ariz. -- A police officer shot and wounded an armed kidnapping suspect outside an elementary school.
A second suspect was arrested near the school.
An officer shot Richard Maldonado, 31, as he tried to escape officers near Menlo Park Elementary School on Thursday.
Officer Eric Ward fired when Maldonado turned a gun on him, said police Chief Richard Miranda. Maldonado was hit several times; his injuries were not life-threatening.
Students were in class but were not in danger during the incident, Miranda said.
Authorities had been chasing Maldonado and Norberto Acuna, 23, after they allegedly kidnapped a man in an attempt to recover money from a drug deal. Acuna surrendered to officers.
Both men were arrested on charges of kidnapping, aggravated assault and robbery.
