When you’re handcuffing prisoners, be on the alert for so-called “survival bracelets,” currently being marketed in a variety of colors on the Internet and via other outlets.
Det. Jeremy Richards of the Santa Fe (N.M.) PD’s Criminal Investigations Division describes a version he found for sale on Ebay:
“It’s a seemingly regular rubber bracelet. When it is opened, it contains a standard handcuff key made of plastic, which can completely bypass metal detectors.
“This bracelet constitutes a huge threat to law enforcement, as it is easy to conceal and deploy when hands are cuffed.”
