MARTINSVILLE, Ind. -- Officers who stopped a Fort Wayne man after he led them on a high-speed chase from Bloomington to Martinsville found a mobile methamphetamine lab in the trunk of his car, police said.

Jeffrey J. Moriarity, 25, was being held today in Monroe County Jail on $4,000 bond on charges of resisting law enforcement with a vehicle and reckless driving, a jail dispatcher said.

The chase began on Indiana 37 at about 1:40 a.m. today when a Bloomington police officer tried to stop the car for a license plate violation, police said.

Authorities said Moriarity fled at speeds approaching 115 mph. Police used stop sticks to puncture the car’s tire and end the chase.

Martinsville is about 20 miles north of Bloomington.

Moriarity was treated at Bloomington Hospital after he was bitten by a police dog, police said.

After the car was stopped, Morgan County sheriff’s deputies noticed a smell of ammonia and contacted state police laboratory personnel. Indiana State Police 1st Sgt. Dave Bursten said the state officers found chemicals used to make meth in the trunk.

Authorities said Moriarity likely would face Morgan County charges related to the meth lab.

A 17-year-old girl who was in the car with Moriarity was taken to a juvenile detention center in Jackson County, police said
