Former Officer Accused of Abuse of Power Sentenced to More Than 17 Years

LITTLE ROCK, ARK. (AP) - A former Carlisle police officer who pleaded guilty to charges that accused him of forcing male motorists he pulled over to perform sex acts has been sentenced to more than 17 years in prison.

Alvin Jeremy Hampton, 25, pleaded guilty to depriving two men of their civil rights. The victims testified at Tuesday’s sentencing hearing, saying Hampton caused them shame, humiliation and other problems.

Hampton, speaking before Chief U.S. District Judge Susan Webber Wright, apologized for the “torment” he caused his victims and his own family.

Wright sentenced Hampton to 17 1/2 years, which was in the middle of the range called for by sentencing guidelines.

Hampton’s lawyer asked for a sentence on the low end - about 15 years. She cited her client’s willingness to confess to offenses that she said federal investigators don’t yet know about. She also noted that Hampton will have to be locked up in a segregated part of the prison because of his background as a former police officer.

Andrew Huang of the Justice Department’s Civil Rights Division told Wright that Hampton abused his authority and harmed the image of law enforcement. He said Hampton engaged in the abuses with “up to a dozen victims.”
