NEW ORLEANS — With little discussion, the New Orleans City Council’s Budget Committee endorsed a package of raises for police Thursday, setting the stage for the full council to make the higher pay official next week.
Under the plan, police recruits will get a 12.5 percent increase, and all higher ranks, from police officers I through majors, will get a 10 percent raise.
Police officers and most other city workers also got a 10 percent raise in the fall.
The latest raises will boost recruits’ pay to more than $34,000 a year and the base pay for police officers I to more than $36,000. Sergeants will get more than $46,000 and captains about $59,000 a year.
The raises are intended to help the Police Department with recruitment of new officers and retention of experienced officers.
The City Council last week also approved giving bonuses to officers in specialized units and those with college degrees.
