(NEW YORK) -- Police Commissioner Bernard Kerik said Monday the department will conduct surveys of ''customers’’ -- as he referred to residents -- to find out if his plans to mend the strained relationship between minority communities and the NYPD are working.
Kerik also announced he is establishing a Community Notification Protocol, which will require commanders to reach out to elected officials and community leaders whenever a serious incident within their neighborhood occurs. He also denounced racial profiling and said if he ever caught an officer practicing it he would do his best to have him fired.
Kerik made his remarks before the Council’s Select Committee on Police Performance and Community Relations.
The department has been criticized over several high-profile police incidents involving minorities, including the fatal shooting of Amadou Diallo and the torture of Abner Louima.
