NORTH BRUNSWICK, N.J. (AP) - An Essex County sheriff’s deputy chased down his live-in girlfriend, repeatedly shot her and then killed himself, authorities said Tuesday.
Gregory Sumter, 40, was pronounced dead shortly after the Monday night shootings. His girlfriend, Helena Hundley, 34, was hospitalized in fair condition at Robert Wood Johnson University Hospital with gunshot wounds to the arm, elbow, chest and wrist.
Hundley is the mother of four children; Sumter, who worked for the sheriff’s office for a decade, was the father of one of them.
The Middlesex County Prosecutor’s Office said Sumter arrived home at about 10:30 p.m. and got into an argument with Hundley in their parking lot. When she got into her minivan and tried to drive away, Sumter took out his duty weapon and shot out the left front tire.
She then sped away in a sport utility vehicle with Sumter in pursuit in another SUV. After a short chase, he cut her vehicle off, got out and used his 9mm handgun to fire several shots through the driver’s side window of Hundley’s vehicle.
Despite her injuries, Hundley used her cell phone to dial 911 and summon police.
Sumter shot himself in the right temple.
