MEMPHIS, Tenn. (AP) - A police officer was wounded and a suspect killed when a robbery at a drugstore turned into a shootout.
Officer James Baker, 43, was treated and released from the Regional Medical Center after he was shot early Friday in his right shoulder and right hand, authorities said.
Robbery suspect Ronald Walker, 24, was shot dead by officers who returned his fire after he fled a Walgreen store on Covington Pike.
No one else was hurt.
Police were looking for three other suspects in the robbery. They were not sure whether it was Walker or another suspect who shot Baker.
Memphis Police spokesman Sgt. Vince Higgins said two armed men wearing dark clothing entered the store and ordered everyone on the ground. Police believe the two other suspects waited outside.
There were at least five employees and possibly two customers in the 24-hour store.
Baker is the third Memphis officer to be shot this year. He has been with the department eight years.
