Can I be a Police Officer and serve God?

During a recent phone conversation a Police officer contacted me and asked me the following question: If we are to serve and protect and be willing to submit ourselves to the assaults of evil people by risking our lives is it possible for me to still follow my faith? How can I continue to be a police officer and serve God? First of all there is a moral need for Police Officers in our society and we need to recognize the officer’s huge value to the community they are sworn to serve and protect. The fact is all of us depend on the laws of the land to keep peace in our communities. As Police Officers your life should be directed not only by your personal convictions but also to keep those you protect from the elements that try to destroy them. Paul wrote in the Bible recognition that authorities may be ministers of God’s justice for the common good check it out and be encouraged. (Romans 13:1-7; 1 Tim. 2:1-2).

ASK THE CHAPLAIN

Q: I serve as a Chaplain for a small agency and have some Officers that are not Christians. I would like to know if you wear crosses on your uniform while working?

A: As a Christian I would have no problem wearing the crosses but, as a Chaplain my call extends into all faiths and even to some who have no religion. I have decided that I would best serve my community without the crosses.

Q: How old are you? How long have you been a Minister? How long have you been a Chaplain?

A: 50, 18, 7 ½

Q: I have made many mistakes in my marriage and I feel so guilty. I love my wife and kids and do not want to tell her I cheated on her. I feel I should then I back out when we are talking. Any suggestions would be appreciated.

A: I do not feel qualified to give you a complete answer on such a serious issue. I have found that over the years making a re-commitment to God and seeking marriage counseling has helped many couples. My suggestion is to find a local marriage counselor and seek their advice on the matter. I will keep you and your family in my prayers.

ARE YOU A POLICE CHAPLAIN?

Send me your Name, Department and email address and a testimony of your call to the Chaplain Program. I will also be looking for interesting stories and experiences to share with our readers’ right here on Police1.com. God Bless until next month.
