Training Tip: Final Sobriety Test
(Secure - Login Required)

If after completing a series of roadside sobriety tests you decide to arrest the subject, consider putting him through this final “test”. Without breaking stride in your testing sequence or announcing your ultimate intention, ask him to extend his arms out to his sides. Then ask him to move his extended arms behind his back, keeping his palms up and bringing his wrists together. Now ask him to turn his back to you, keeping his arms in their current behind-the-back position. He thinks his ability to complete the task is still being tested, so he’ll willingly comply. In reality, you’ve positioned him for quick, safe cuffing before he’s had a chance to even consider resisting arrest.
