CLEARWATER, Fla. — A dolphin calf is getting a second chance at life after a quick-thinking off-duty deputy rescued it.
The Pasco Sheriff’s Office said the deputy was fishing off the coast when he found the tiny dolphin swimming in circles and struggling to get above water to breathe.
The deputy contacted PSO’s MAROPS, who responded and took the dolphin by boat to meet Clearwater Marine Aquarium personnel. The dolphin was later transferred to the care of SeaWorld Rescue. SeaWorld Rescue said the dolphin remains in critical condition, but is showing signs of improvement and swimming on his own.
“We’re proud of the swift actions of our deputies, both on and off duty,” the sheriff’s office said in a Facebook post.
The sheriff’s office noted that if you see an animal in distress, notify the proper authorities immediately and keep an eye on the animal from a distance to help first responders find it.
