BROWNSVILLE, Texas — A U.S. law enforcement official says the two federal agents shot on a northern Mexico highway were forced off the road by armed men in at least two vehicles.

The official says Immigration and Customs Enforcement Special Agent Jaime Zapata put his SUV back in drive after being run off the road. He died after he couldn’t flee the scene Tuesday in San Luis Potosi. The second agent, Victor Avila, was wounded and was briefly treated at a Texas hospital.

The official says the agents identified themselves as American diplomats before the gunmen opened fire. The official spoke on condition of anonymity because he is not authorized to discuss the case publicly.

Zapata and Avila, both from Texas, were assigned to the ICE attache office in Mexico City.
