HUNTINGTON, W.Va. — A West Virginia police department is mourning the loss of one of their own.

WSAZ reports that Huntington Police Chief Joe Ciccarelli, 60, died after a long battle with cancer Monday. Ciccarelli took on the role of Huntington PD chief in 2014.

“We lost a dear friend today,” Mayor Steve Williams said in a release. “Chief Joe was brave, and he demonstrated courage that inspired us all. Joe’s bright smile will be missed as well as his gentle but determined demeanor. He was dedicated to his love for his family, service to his community, and loyalty to his department. Most of all, he was a Huntington Police officer. We will miss our friend.”

Ciccarelli started his law enforcement career in the 1970s, including 30 years of work for the FBI. During his FBI career, he conducted or supervised many large-scale, international drug investigations.

A funeral will take place this weekend.
