SAN JOSE, Calif. — A San Jose State University police officer shot and killed a knife-wielding suspect near the edge of campus Friday, authorities said.

The shooting was reported near South Eighth and East San Salvador streets on the southern edge of the campus about 11 a.m.

Campus police had been investigating reports of someone armed with a knife. Two officers found the man, and he charged them, prompting one of the officers to shock him with a Taser, officials said.

The device did not stop the man’s advance, though, and the second officer then shot the suspect, officials said.

After the shooting, emergency personnel performed CPR on the suspect, who later died at Santa Clara Valley Medical Center in San Jose. The man was not immediately identified.
