SAN MATEO, Calif.- San Mateo police say an officer fatally shot and killed a homeless man after the man allegedly threatened a police officer with a switchblade knife.
The officer was called to a disturbance at a grocery store in San Mateo’s downtown yesterday afternoon over reports the man had been picking a fight with a customer.
Police say the man advanced on the officer and continued to approach him even after the officer zapped him with a taser stun gun. Investigators say the officer then opened fire with his gun.
The 49-year-old homeless man died at the scene.
The veteran officer is on routine administrative leave pending an investigation.
The victim’s name was withheld until his family is notified.
