It has been reported that the Beltway Sniper suspect John Allen Muhammad has ties to the religion of Islam. It has also been reported that he may have been part of the Nation of Islam (NOI) security force, generally known as the Fruit of Islam (FOI) for the million man march held in Washington D.C in 1995.
With this small bit of background information as we now know it, there is a possibility that John Allen Muhammad may have become involved with another group that has origins in the United States. This group, The Five Percenters, is also commonly known as The Nation of Gods and Earths, and has been known as The Five Percent Nation of Islam. There are two investigative leads in the Beltway murders that lend credence to this theory which will be discussed later.
Five Percenter Background
The Five Percenters were founded circa 1963 by Clarence Smith, a native of Danville, Virginia. Smith later became known as “Father”, “Allah”, and “Clarence 13X.” After an honorable discharge from the military after the Korean War, he went to New York where his wife was involved with the Nation of Islam. He also joined the NOI and soon became a teacher under Malcolm X. Smith began perverting and teaching lessons and information that was found to be undesirable to the NOI and was banned from the NOI temple. He immediately went into the streets of Harlem and began recruiting children to be followers of his teachings. Several attempts were made on the life of Smith. The second attempt, in 1969, was successful and the murder is still unsolved.
Immediately following the death of Smith, the Five Percenters floundered. But after a stagnant period, they began to flourish and today there are followers of the culture that come from all walks of life, including lawyers, doctors, educators, law enforcement and corrections personnel. It must be noted that the majority of these followers are not connected with crime or the criminal element. For the most part, the criminal element of the Five Percenters exists in departments of corrections including the Federal Bureau of Prisons. Several departments have validated the group as a Security Threat Group (gang) and have placed all known members of the group in administrative segregation, separating them from the general population. There have also been groups, identified as street gangs, as well as individuals, who were identified as Five Percenters and who were known to commit crimes, including large scale narcotics sales and murder.
Although the Five Percenters originated in New York, throughout the years, they have spread to many other parts of the country, primarily on the east coast. States where they are known to exist include, but are not necessarily limited to California, Colorado, Connecticut, Florida, Georgia, Indiana, Kentucky, Louisiana, Maryland, Massachusetts, Michigan, New Jersey, New York, North Carolina, Ohio, Pennsylvania, Rhode Island, South Carolina, Texas, Virginia, Washington, Wisconsin, the District of Columbia and Canada.
“Holy cities” and their Five Percenter names include Harlem, NY - Mecca, Brooklyn, NY - Medina, Long Island, NY - Lords Island, Dallas, TX - Sudan, Detroit, MI - D Mecca, San Francisco, CA - West Asia, Los Angeles - Lord Allah, New Haven, CT - New Heaven, and Seattle, WA - Morocco
What are the Five Percenters and what do they teach?
The Five Percenters teach the followers of the culture thru a series of written lessons. Many of these lessons were taken from the writings of Elijah Muhammad but the Five Percenters strongly disavow any connection to any religion. Throughout their teachings and newspaper articles, they emphatically state “We are not a religion.”
If they are not a religion, what are they? They claim to be a culture or a way of life. They teach and claim that the Black man is a true and living god and that there is no “mystery” god above. They also teach that the population of the world is made up of three classes of people;
1) The eight-five percent (85%)
2) The ten percent (10%)
3) The Five Percent (5%)
The 85% are “the uncivilized people, the poison animal eaters (pork products), who are easily led in the wrong direction.”
The 10% are “the rich slave makers of the poor, who teach the poor lies to believe that the Almighty true and living God is a spook and cannot be seen by the physical eye; otherwise known as the blood suckers of the poor.”
The 5% are the “poor righteous teachers who do not believe in the teachings of the 10% (the Caucasian Devil) and who is all wise and know who the true and living God is. Who teach that the true and living God is the SON of MAN, Supreme Being, Blackman from Asia, who teaches freedom, justice, and equality to all human family of the planet earth.”
Is there a connection?
Throughout the teachings of the Five Percenters, it is emphasized that the Blackman is god, which brings me to the first of two reasons for theorizing that the Beltway killer may have ties to the Five Percenters. It was reported during the murder investigation that the Tarot “death” card had written on it, “I am God.” In addition, the killers left a letter in Ashland, VA which may be seen by Clicking Here
In this letter, on the first page it is written “For you Mr. Police. ‘Call me God’. Do not release to the press.” I do not believe that a true believer of the Islamic faith, a Muslim, even a sick-minded terrorist would call himself God. They sincerely and devoutly believe in Allah, and the prophets. They believe that all that they do, to kill the infidels, is in the name of Allah and that Allah will sing praises of them. They would not call themselves “god.”
Another reason to suspect that John Allen Muhammad may be connected to the Five Percenters is the use of the phrase “Our word is our bond” which was used by Chief Moose of the Montgomery County Police, and which apparently was an attempt to connect with, or continue a dialogue with Muhammad.
Found in one of the many lessons taught by the Five Percenters is a question which asks: “Have you not heard that your word shall be bond, regardless of whom or what?” To which the answer is given and states: “Yes! My word is bond, and bond is life, and I will give my life before my word shall fail.”
In the same lesson another question asks: “Why does Muhammad or any other Muslim (remember these lessons were taken in part from the NOI) murder the devil? What is the duty of each Muslim in regards to four devils? What reward does a Muslim receive by presenting four devils at one time??
Excerpts from the answer include: “Because the devil is weak and wicked and will not keep and obey the laws of Islam”........"So they had to be murdered because they know they are a snake”........"His reward is a button to wear”....."also free transportation to the city of Mecca (Harlem) to see their brother Muhammad.”
Conclusion
I have found it interesting to look at the senseless murders in the Maryland, Washington, and Virginia area from this perspective. John Allen Muhammad may or may not be connected with the Five Percenters. However, if he is, this information is a starting point to explain why he chose to kill so many without regard to race, sex or age. You may be wondering why he would kill Blacks or Afro Americans. The reason; any Black that does not subscribe to the teachings of a Five Percenter is referred to as an “Asiatic Devil.”
