Prison workout routines

Want a sobering reality check on how you stack up physically against the adversaries you meet on the street? Do a Google search for “prison workout routines,” and browse through the multitude of blogs and other websites that pop up. You’ll find exercise programs specifically designed for criminals who are so dangerous they need to be confined to their cells virtually around the clock.

Without any conventional equipment, hardened murderers, rapists, armed robbers and other felons are advised on how to “use your own body weight or objects and props found around your cell” to develop the functional fitness necessary “to fight, run, move with speed and explosiveness, whether you are standing on your feet or lying on the ground,” according to one blogger who claims social work training from Rutgers University.

One popular routine, “meant to give [criminals] the edge in surviving violent encounters,” is called the burpee. This involves descending sets of squats-to-pushups activity that requires little space but can build remarkable strength and stamina.

According to one site, “In prison, you’re not considered a man unless you can do 20 descending sets without stopping.” Do 25, and you’re “considered pretty tough; people think twice before messing with you.” If 30 sets are your norm, “you are given much respect.”

Try it. See how ready you are for the scumbags who have nothing to do but practice all day—and will eventually be released back to your beat.
