LONDON- A senior officer at the center of a police operation in which a Brazilian man was mistakenly shot as a terrorist has been selected for promotion, London’s Metropolitan Police Authority said Tuesday.
Commander Cressida Dick has been “provisionally selected” with three other officers to become a Deputy Assistant Commissioner in London’s Metropolitan Police, an authority spokesman said.
Jean Charles de Menezes, 27, was shot in the head seven times by Scotland Yard anti-terror officers as he sat aboard a subway train at an Underground railway station in south London on July 22, 2005.
Two weeks earlier, four suicide bombers had attacked London’s transit system, killing 52 people.
In July, Britain’s Crown Prosecution Service decided not to charge any individual officers in connection with the shooting, which provoked an angry response from civil libertarians and de Menezes’ family. Instead, the Metropolitan Police has been charged with health and safety breaches over the killing.
