SALISBURY, N.C. (AP) -- A man accused of flashing a handgun and robbing a Bank of America branch left behind a helpful clue for police: a wallet, with a driver’s license in it.
Police were searching Thursday for Alfred Pleasant Hemric Jr., 41, of Lexington on a warrant charging him with robbery with a dangerous weapon.
Investigators who compared the license with surveillance video footage and witnesses’ accounts say they believe Hemric is the robber.
A man entered the bank Tuesday afternoon, gave the teller a note demanding money and displayed a silver, large-frame semiautomatic handgun, police Lt. David Belk said.
The teller complied and the man ran from the bank with an undisclosed amount of money, dropping some cash outside and leaving his wallet in the bank, Belk said.
No one was injured during the robbery.
Deputy police chief Steve Whitley said he couldn’t remember a robber ever dropping a driver’s license at the scene of a bank robbery in town.
“We’ve had them write requests down on deposit slips or on the back of a pay stub, that type thing,” he said. “Occasionally they’ll do things like that, not often though.”
