CEDAR GROVE, N.J. — A New Jersey State Police lieutenant who developed a brain tumor after working at Ground Zero in the wake of the Sept. 11 attacks has died.

Lt. Bill Fearon was diagnosed in 2015 with glioblastoma after an MRI found a spot on his left frontal lobe, according to the NJ State Police Facebook page. The brain tumor affected Fearon’s reading, thinking, speech, muscle movements and emotions.

Three days after his diagnosis, he had surgery and fought until he died on Dec. 28. The department said Fearon kept his sense of humor and positive attitude while fighting the illness. A GoFundMe page was started to help with medical costs, which has raised nearly $60,000.

Fearon was a graduate of the 114th Jersey State Police Class and served in multiple roles within the Field Operations section. He served with the State Police for 22 years.

He leaves behind his wife, Janice, and three children.
