DELAWARE COUNTY, Pa. — A Delaware County Park Police officer died of a heart attack last week after helping corrections officers move a group of protesters from the county jail.
Edward A. Wehe III, 57, also worked as a part-time police officer in Marcus Hook borough, according to a statement from the Delaware County Fraternal Order of Police, Lodge 27. He was also a 21-year veteran of the U.S. Navy.
Wehe went to the George Hill Correctional Facility on the morning of Nov. 5 to assist with clearing a protest by the group Citizens for Social Justice. The group had planned to hold a peaceful protest across from the prison to highlight issues that included abuse of inmates and improper releases. The group was told it had to move more than a mile away, and police guarded the entry to the prison grounds.
About 20 minutes after Wehe finished helping at the prison, according to the FOP, he suffered the heart attack. Emergency responders unsuccessfully attempted to revive him by performing CPR.
Wehe is survived by his fiance, his daughter, and a granddaughter, according to the FOP.
