HARTFORD, Conn. — A state trooper broke his leg while chasing a Bristol man who’d led troopers on a car chase through Hartford, then ran after crashing his car.
Trevor McCarthy, 22, who also hurt his leg while running away from state police, was ordered held on $110,000 bail after his arraignment Wednesday at Superior Court in Hartford.
The incident began about 1:10 a.m. when a trooper driving on Broad Street ran the license plate on the Mazda sedan McCarthy was driving, according to a police report. The plate did not match the car and the trooper turned on his car’s emergency lights to stop the Mazda. Instead, the Mazda took off and led the trooper and several colleagues on an approximately five-mile chase.
The chase ended on eastbound I-84 at the Ann Uccello Street exit where police say McCarthy lost control of the Mazda and hit a state police car. Police said McCarthy took off running with a trooper right behind him. The trooper jumped over a barrier in pursuit of McCarthy and broke his left leg and ankle when he landed on the ground about 12 feet below. A Hartford officer drove him to Hartford Hospital.
Another trooper and Hartford officers chased down McCarthy.
A passenger in the Mazda, Kevin Allen, 24, of New Britain, stayed in the car and was taken into custody.
Both McCarthy and Allen were charged with possession of narcotics, possession with intent to sell, possession of marijuana and other drug charges, police said.
Police also charged McCarthy with engaging police in pursuit, reckless driving, reckless endangerment, operating while under the influence, evading responsibility, interfering with police, criminal trespass and motor vehicle charges.
Police said they found cocaine and marijuana in the car and cocaine in McCarthy’s pants pocket.
Allen was held on $50,000 bail and is due back in court Jan. 14. McCarthy’s next court date is Jan. 15.
