RED BANK, N.J. — A police officer trapped at the site of an apartment fire was rescued by a firefighter Tuesday night.

Two unidentified officers entered an apartment complex looking for lingering residents after the building had been evacuated.

After thick smoke engulfed them, one officer was able to exit the building, but the second became trapped under a collapsed ceiling on the second floor, borough fire marshal Stanley Sickels told the Asbury Park Press.

Firefighters used an aerial ladder to reach the officer, Sickels told the newspaper.
