SNYDER, Texas — A police officer was in a critical condition Tuesday after being shot in the head during a shootout.
Officer Darrell Campbell had been responding to a “shots fired” call just after midnight Tuesday with fellow officer Lee Ortiz when he was shot, according to a news release from the Snyder Police Department.
Police say as the two officers were talking to a man, he pulled a gun and shot Campbell. Officer Ortiz then returned fire, killing the man, KCBD reported.
Campbell was released from emergency surgery Tuesday afternoon, and residents in Synder held a vigil to pray for him that night.
“It is a brotherhood for police, whether they are in Lubbock or another city in Texas or really anywhere. It feels like a brother. So when that happens to one of our brothers we want to step in and help any way we can, there is a pretty deep connection there,” Sgt. Jonathan Stewart said.
The case is currently being investigated by the Texas Ranger and the Snyder Police Department.
