LONG BEACH, Calif. — A Long Beach police officer was shot and a suspect was injured Sunday night in a shooting at an apartment complex.

Shots rang out about 9:06 p.m. after officers went to the building in the 3000 block of Artesia Boulevard for an unspecified trouble call, said Marlene Arrona, spokeswoman for the Long Beach Police Department.

As officers entered the complex, the suspect began shooting at them, she said. Officers immediately returned fire.

An officer who was struck by gunfire was in stable condition at a hospital with non-life-threatening injuries.

Officials with the Long Beach Police Officers Assn. expressed concern over the shooting.

“We’ve had an officer-involved shooting tonight in north Long Beach. Your thoughts and prayers are appreciated,” the group tweeted.

The suspect also was injured and taken to a hospital. The suspect was in stable condition, Arrona said.

Police closed Artesia Boulevard as they continued their investigation.
