LINDON, Utah — A trooper is in critical condition after he was struck by his own patrol car that was hit by a driver who fell asleep.

Police told KSL that Trooper Devin Gurney, 27, was conducting a traffic stop Monday when an SUV came across multiple lanes and struck the back of his patrol car. The car was pushed forward and struck Gurney. Police said the driver, 48, fell asleep behind the wheel.

Sgt. Todd Royce said although Gurney is critically wounded, his injuries are considered non-life threatening.

The man who fell asleep and allegedly caused the crash had his 11-year-old daughter, and 8-year-old and 5-year-old sons with him in the vehicle. Investigators said the daughter tried to wake him up before he crashed into the trooper’s car. They suffered minor injuries.

“They will survive, thank goodness,” Sgt. Royce said. “This could have been a lot worse than it is.”

The driver of the car Gurney pulled over was taken to the hospital for neck soreness and a 15-month old in the vehicle was not injured, KSL reported.
