HICKORY HILLS, Ill. — Police shot two people in a stolen car in Hickory Hills on Friday after the driver ran over a Burbank police officer, officials said.
The officer and both motorists, a man and a woman, were taken to Advocate Christ Medical Center in Oak Lawn. The officer was in stable condition, a police source said. The conditions of the other two were not available Friday evening.
A police official said the incident began about 5 p.m. Chicago Ridge police had located a Toyota sedan that was reported stolen on April 26 in Alsip. When Alsip police came to retrieve the vehicle, the driver sped off. Three officers from Burbank and another from Alsip gave chase, a police official said.
Just east of 95th Street and Roberts Road in Hickory Hills, a plainclothes officer got out of his vehicle and tried to flag down the driver. The vehicle struck him, police said.
It was unknown how fast the car was traveling when it struck the officer, police said. The nature of his injuries was not disclosed.
Other officers opened fire, striking both the driver and passenger and shattering windows on the gray sedan, officials said.
Illinois State Police were called to the scene because the shooting involved police. The street remained blocked for hours as police investigated. Spent shell casings littered the pavement around the car.
A police source said surveillance tape inside a nearby BP station will be reviewed to see if the shooting was captured by the cameras.
