MONTGOMERY, Ala. — An officer suffered serious injuries after getting shot multiple times attempting to arrest a shoplifting suspect Sunday.
According to WSFA, Officer Robert F. Hubbard responded to reports of a shoplifter at a Walmart and attempted to arrest 31-year-old Matthew Lawrencereno Wright.
Wright pulled a gun and opened fire before fleeing the scene.
Wright carjacked a vehicle at gunpoint and a manhunt for the fugitive involving local, state and federal law enforcement ensued.
Hours after the shooting, police were tipped off to Wright’s location after he used a gas card at a station and was spotted by an officer in an unmarked car.
Police pursued the suspect, who drove through a road block and attempted to run over an officer, according to the report. Police opened fire at the vehicle before Wright crashed into a tree and carjacked a second vehicle.
After ditching the vehicle and fleeing on foot, officers arrested Wright nearly nine hours after the original shooting incident and hundreds of miles away in Louisiana.
Wright was shot in the abdomen during the pursuit. He was transported to a hospital for treatment and taken to a detention center upon release.
Officer Hubbard, a five-year veteran of the Montgomery Police Department, was transported to a hospital in serious condition and is continuing to recover Monday. He is expected to fully recover from his injuries.
Wright faces multiple felony charges, according to the report.
