GLENDALE, Calif. — A suspect was killed and a police officer wounded in a running gun battle Monday night.
Police said the officer took a bullet to the chest but escaped serious injury because he was wearing a protective vest.
Sgt. Tom Lorenz said the shooting occurred around 9:30 p.m. near South Chevy Chase Drive and East Colorado Street and had started as a foot pursuit.
The suspect shot at the first officer chasing him, who returned fire and called for backup.
A second officer joined the pursuit and more shots were fired. That officer took a bullet to the chest but was wearing his vest, Lorenz said.
A third officer arrived and the suspect shot out the rear window of his cruiser.
Officers again fired, killing the suspect, Lorenz said.
The wounded officer is a veteran member of the force and expected to fully recover, Lorenz said. Police were not immediately releasing that officer’s name or the identity of the dead suspect.
Lorenz said he did not know what set off the pursuit.
