MIAMI — A Miami-Dade police officer shot and killed a man along a freeway entrance ramp Monday morning, Miami-Herald reported.
The incident occurred when the officers responded to calls of a car crash, Miami-Dade Detective Daniel Ferrin told the publication. When they arrived, they found a yellow cab with its driver’s side front bumper lodged up against a light pole. The suspect Junior Prosper was pointed out by witnesses and began to run up the highway entrance ramp.
Police pursued Prosper and confronted him as he hid some shrubs on the side of the road. The officers attempted to calm Prosper down and a TASER was deployed.
“A TASER was deployed, but we don’t know if the cop did it,” Ferrin said in his interview. “The subject started biting his hand to the point that the discharge occurred.”
A struggle ensued and Prosper severely severed a finger on the officer’s left hand. The officer then fired his weapon. Police haven’t released how many rounds were fired.
“The subject was deceased on the scene,” Ferrin said.
The officer was sent to the hospital to have his finger reattached.
The officer’s identity hasn’t been released, but he is a nine-year veteran of the force, Ferrin told the publication.
The incident occurred during rush hour and caused traffic jams after authorities shut down parts of interstate. An investigation is ongoing.
