WICHITA FALLS, Texas — A former sheriff’s deputy was shot to death after a standoff with members of the office where he once worked.
Wichita County Sheriff’s deputies responded to Scott Helenschmidt’s Burkburnett house Wednesday night. Someone had called, claiming to be armed, holding a hostage and barricaded in a house.
Over the next three hours officers tried numerous times in vain to talk with him. After Helenschmidt fired several shots outside, a deputy fired a single shot, killing him.
There never was a hostage.
The 47-year-old Helenschmidt worked as a Wichita County deputy for several years, and he left that position in 1996.
