YORK, Pa. — A nonprofit is stepping up for the widow of a Deputy U.S. Marshal killed while serving a warrant.

The York Dispatch reports that the Stephen Siller Tunnel to Towers Foundation will donate $100,000 to help pay off the mortgage for the widow and two children of Deputy U.S. Marshal Christopher David Hill. The organization is calling on others to donate too so the entire mortgage note can be paid off.

On Jan. 18, Hill, 45, and a few other members of the U.S. Marshals Service’s Fugitive Task Force were serving an arrest warrant in Harrisburg when they were shot. Hill died of his injuries.

The organization was started by the family of Stephen Siller, an NYC firefighter who was killed while saving people in the Twin Towers on 9/11. Frank Siller, Stephen’s brother, said his family wanted to honor his sacrifice.

Frank Siller praised Hill’s work and called him an “American hero.” He said it’s only right to honor fallen American heroes by making sure their families are cared for.

“Our promise, our commitment, is that in very, very short period of time, that Deputy Hill’s family will never have to worry about their home again,” Siller said. “God knows, they have enough to deal with.”

Harrisburg Mayor Eric Papenfuse said he is calling on “everyone to make a donation.”

Siller said if the donations exceed the mortgage loan amount, the rest of the money will go directly to Hill’s wife and children.

A memorial service honoring Hill will be held Thursday at 1 p.m. EST.

Hotels in the area are also accepting donates and offering discounted rates for the many law enforcement officers traveling to pay their respects to Hill, according to WHTM-TV. The effort was started by a Facebook group of wives of first responders who want to pay it forward.
