Gunman fatally shot after wounding Colo. officer

“This incident serves as a good reminder of three important survival points,” says P1 Senior Contributor Chuck Remsberg. “Threats to officers don’t just come in big cities, no crime is too insignificant to be dangerous to officers working it, and the elderly are not to be underestimated when it comes to their ability to hurt you.”

WINDSOR, Colo. — A police officer was shot four times and a gunman was killed in a confrontation Saturday afternoon, authorities said.

Around 2 p.m., two officers responded to the Governor’s Farm senior citizens apartment complex after an estimated $25 worth of candy was stolen from a grocery store, the Weld County Sheriff’s Office said.

The Windsor officers were attempting to serve an arrest warrant when the unidentified 68-year-old man opened fire.

The wounded officer was rushed to Medical Center of the Rockies in nearby Loveland, where he was listed in good condition.

Three of the gunman’s bullets hit the officer’s bulletproof vest, police said. The other bullet hit his lower abdomen.

The other officer at the scene returned fire, apparently fatally wounding the gunman.

The gunman was found dead in his doorway with a gunshot wound after a robot was sent into his apartment around 4:20 p.m.

Those who knew the gunman said he had been behaving differently lately.
