JACKSON, Miss. — A Jackson police officer shot and wounded a suspect as the officer was being dragged on a downtown street after a traffic stop, the police department said.
The incident began when a patrolman stopped a gray Chevrolet Tahoe near City Hall about 1:05 a.m. Sunday.
The officer, whose name has not been released, suspected the driver of running a red light, police said. When the officer put his hand out to take the drivers license and insurance information, the driver grabbed the officer’s arm and drove off, dragging the officer, a department news release said.
The officer ordered the suspect to stop, but the driver kept going. The officer pulled his service pistol and fired one round at the driver, who then released the officer and drove off, the release said.
The officer hit the ground and was nearly struck by an oncoming vehicle. The officer drove himself to the University of Mississippi Medical Center emergency room, where he was treated for cuts, scrapes and bruises.
The man police suspect in the incident, Kareem Boykins, 24, of Jackson showed up a short time later at UMC with a gunshot wound to an arm.
He was arrested, charged with aggravated assault on a police officer and was being held without bond, according to the JPD arrest docket. The officer was placed on administrative leave until the investigation into the incident is finished.
