DURHAM, N.C. A Durham police officer was wounded Sunday night when he and other officers interrupted an apparent burglary in progress.

Officers were called about 9 p.m. to a northwest Durham neighborhood, where they went around to the back of 1410A Cherrycrest Drive. Details were sketchy late Sunday, but officials said shots were fired at the officers from inside the duplex. One officer was wounded in the arm and back.

Michael McLaughlin, who lives a few houses down on Cherrycrest, said he heard the gunshots and went outside to see an officer giving first aid to the wounded officer.

Officials said the hurt officer, who was not identified because his family had not been notified, was taken by his partner in their patrol car to Duke Hospital. He is in stable condition, according to police spokeswoman Kammie Michael.
