RALEIGH, N.C. — A Raleigh police officer was wounded and a robbery suspect killed after he exchanged gunfire with an officer, police said.

Police identified the suspect as David Tylek Atkinson Thursday morning and released security video of him jumping over the counter at the BP on New Bern Avenue, pointing a gun at the clerk and taking cash and tobacco products.

He fled on foot toward Clarendon Oaks apartments, police said in a news release.

Bystanders pointed police in Atkinson’s direction, and as officers confronted him, they exchanged shots, the police department said in a release. Police took Atkinson into custody and started administering first aid until EMS arrived.

Atkinson was taken to the hospital, where he died.

The State Bureau of Investigation is conducting an investigation, the results of which will be presented to the Wake County District Attorney, as is standard practice. The Raleigh Police Department will conduct its own investigation.
