NEWARK, N.J. — An animal control officer was killed Wednesday morning, NJ.com reported.
Alvis G. Carrington, 43, was fatally shot, Acting Essex County Prosecutor Carolyn Murray and Newark Public Safety Director Anthony Ambrose told the news site in a statement.
It was not immediately clear whether the 16-year veteran officer was on-duty during the shooting.
Carrington helped rescue many animals from “deplorable conditions,” the Newark Animal Shelter Facebook page said.
“He was a friend, a loyal employee and will be missed by all of us,” they wrote in a Facebook post.
Carrington is survived by his wife and children.
Authorities are investigating the incident. No further information was available.
