SPRINGFIELD, Ohio — The parents of an Ohio sheriff’s deputy say that after learning she’d been shot to death in a standoff, they discovered a cheery recorded phone message from her.
Clark County Deputy Suzanne Hopper left a message wishing her mother a happy New Year about an hour before she was killed Saturday morning in the shooting at a campground.
Hopper’s father, Charles Bauer, tells the Springfield News-Sun that he and his wife, Bonnie, broke down when they heard their daughter’s voice.
Visitation for Hopper is scheduled for Thursday in Springfield, and a funeral for Friday.
The gunman in the standoff also died, and a second officer was wounded.
