VALLEY FORGE, Penn. — The National Park Service and the FBI yesterday were investigating the shooting in Valley Forge National Historical Park of a man who allegedly threatened two park rangers on Saturday night.
The shooting happened after the unidentified man emerged from woods where the rangers were investigating a suspicious SUV on Outer Line Drive, said Jill Hawk, regional chief ranger for the service. The area was closed to the public.
When the rangers requested identification, the man went to his car and returned with a gun, Hawk said. The man, who smelled of alcohol, then sat on a hillside, she said.
The man allegedly made threatening remarks and was shot three times by a ranger, Hawk said. He was struck in the hand, groin and neck.
He was taken to the Hospital of the University of Pennsylvania. His name and condition were not released yesterday. The names of the rangers also were not released.
