BWC: Homicide suspect drives car onto Calif. pier, jumps out with gun before fatal OIS

Santa Ana officers pursued the man down the Newport Beach Pier and opened fire when he got out of the car while holding a pistol

NEWPORT BEACH, Calif. — The Santa Ana Police Department released body camera footage from a Feb. 1 police pursuit that ended in a fatal shooting on the Newport Beach Pier, KCAL reported.

The incident began after Menifee police requested assistance in locating a homicide suspect accused of killing a 38-year-old woman earlier that day, according to the report.

The suspect led officers on a pursuit through multiple cities before driving onto the Newport Beach Pier, passing several bystanders, helicopter video shows. Upon reaching the end of the pier, the man exited his Honda CRV with a pistol in hand, prompting officers to open fire. The suspect was shot multiple times and died at the scene.

Authorities later confirmed that the handgun found in the suspect’s possession was believed to be the same weapon used in the earlier homicide, according to the report.

The shooting forced the closure of the pier and surrounding roads for several hours. No officers or bystanders were injured in either incident.
