NEWINGTON, Conn. — Two Hartford men face numerous charges after a patrol officer foiled an armed robbery Saturday night at a Main Street gas station, police said.
Webster Francois, 20, of 48 Henry St., and Matthieu James, 23, of 121 Henry St., each face charges of first-degree robbery, first-degree unlawful restraint, first-degree reckless endangerment, sixth-degree larceny and conspiracy to commit those crimes.
Francois was also charged with carrying a pistol without a permit and criminal use of a firearm, and was released Sunday after posting $250,000 bail, Lt. William Darby said Monday. Francois has a March 3 court date, while Matthieu remained in custody on $250,000 bail.
At 9:09 p.m., a patrol officer drove past Dan’s Shell, a gas station at 295 Main St., and noticed that two masked men were inside the station with the clerk, according to authorities. As the officer pulled into the parking lot, he saw that the men — later identified as Francois and James — were taking money from the cash register. The officer then called for backup and held Francois and James at gunpoint until other officers arrived, police said.
A loaded revolver and less than $250 in cash were recovered at the scene, Darby said.
