LAWRENCE, Ind. — Dash cam video shows pieces of the ambush on an officer who was shot in the head and wrist during a traffic stop.
Fortville K-9 officer Matt Fox, 29, pulled over a vehicle Friday night, but before he could get out, was attacked with bullets from a powerful weapon, police said.
In the video, the suspect gets out of his car and points his gun. While off-screen, he shoots and is then seen re-entering the vehicle, fleeing the scene as Fox radios that he’d been shot.
Witnesses told local news RTV6 they heard “75 to 100 rounds” of fire, which left Fox with head and wrist injuries. His body armor stopped another, potentially deadly shot to the chest, other sources told the station.
Despite his wounds, Fox was able to describe the suspect and vehicle to other officers on the radio. Fox was listed in stable condition Saturday.
Responding officers from Lawrence and Indianapolis confronted James Lockhart III at a nearby apartment complex. Police said he struck a cruiser, got out of his car and opened fire on officers.
Police returned fire and killed him. Another officer and a K-9 were wounded in the gunfight.
