ALBANY TOWNSHIP, Pa. — A deputy was fatally shot while attempting to serve an arrest warrant as part of a fugitive task force Wednesday.
Deputy Kyle Pagerly and his K-9 pursued an armed man, Matthew Connor, who was suspected of burglary, criminal trespass, making terroristic threats, and simple assault.
Pagerly ordered Connor to drop the gun, and when he refused, gunfire was exchanged.
Connor was shot and killed at the scene, and Pagerly was taken to the hospital but later died.
Deputy Pagerly was a U.S. Army veteran and had served with the Berks County Sheriff’s Department for five years. He also served with the Spring Township Fire Department. He is survived by his wife.
Gov. Tom Corbett ordered all Pennsylvania flags in the Capitol complex and at state facilities in Berks County lowered to half-staff Thursday in honor of Pagerly, according to The Reading Eagle.
