MASHPEE, Mass. - An 8-year-old girl is sharing “protection from above” with local officers by giving them medals that depict Saint Michael, the patron saint of law enforcement.
According to Boston 25 News, Caoimhe Assad has been presenting St. Michael medals to officers throughout Mashpee, hoping to give protection to those who work in field.
Caoimhe’s mother, Karen Assad, says the medals are in honor of Weymounth Police Sgt. Michael Chesna and Yarmouth Police Sgt. Sean Gannon, who were shot and killed in the line of duty last year.
“Very proud of her, she was very passionate about this from the beginning,” Karen said. “She’s always been very tuned in, so she was very, I think, aware of the sadness that was in the community last summer and last spring. I think that really spurred her on to want to do something.”
Assad comes from a family of officers. Her father is a sergeant and her grandfather is a K-9 officer.
The 8-year-old has already handed out 200 medals and plans to give out 1,000. Assad held a bake sale at her church and collected cans and bottles to pay for the medals. People have also been sending her donations.
She plans to give medals to every police department in the Boston/Cape Cod area. If she has any money left over from fundraising, she plans to donate it for the care of retired police dogs.
