CINCINNATI —A Cincinnati Police office who was in Haiti on a mission trip, and who survived a devastating earthquake, is now home and talking about her experience. Officer Rachel Reuss works in District Three, which includes Price Hill, North Fairmount, and Westwood.
She went to Haiti with a Columbus based group called Lifeline Christian Ministries just days before a 7.0 magnitude quake hit the region. Reuss was traveling with 57 other woman, in the village of Grand Guave, which is about five miles west of Port Au Prince. The group was passing out Christmas gifts to children and had just left the shelter where the event was taking place. When the earthquake happened, the shelter crumbled and everything inside was crushed.
On Saturday, Reuss returned to the U.S. on a cargo plane with about 200 other Americans. Her husband plans to leave for Haiti next week to help with relief efforts. The couple hopes that others will remember to help out, even as images of the disaster fade from the news in the coming weeks, months, and years.
