GREENVILLE, S.C. — Greenville Police Officer Nate Phillips, a 5-year veteran of the department, will receive the “Hero Among Heroes” award for his attempts to revive fellow Officer Allen Jacobs.
Phillips arrived on the scene to find Jacobs lying on the ground behind a house April 25, WYFF reported. Jacobs had multiple fatal bullet wounds from 17-year-old gang member Deontea Perry Mackey.
“My whole goal was to find every wound and treat it in some way,” Phillips told WYFF. “The first one I came to was his leg wound. Once I got the tourniquet tight enough to stop the bleeding, I continued on.”
A former Iraqi War soldier, Phillips told the publication he wants to make the town a safer place for others and he tries to talk to as many citizens as he can during his shift.
As for the night he lost a friend and brother, Phillips told WYFF about the bond of family that comes when officers join the force.
“You do everything you can for that person that day, and sometimes your best isn’t good enough. It’s about a brotherhood. It’s about a strong relationship between all of us that we know is there. It’s our second family.”
