STANLEY, Va. — An officer was shot and killed during a traffic stop Friday.
According to NBC-29, Officer Dominic Winum, 48, initiated a traffic stop on a vehicle. The suspect, 29-year-old Dakota G. Richards, exited his vehicle and shot Winum before he could get out of his patrol car.
The suspect fled and was later located hiding in a barn. Police say the suspect made a threatening movement and was fatally shot by deputies, according to the report.
ODMP reports the officer had served with Virginia State Police for 10 years prior to joining the Stanley PD, where he served for five years.
