FULLERTON, Calif. — The Fullerton Police Department plans to fire three officers involved in the death of homeless man Kelly Thomas.
Officers Manuel Anthony Ramos, Joe Wolfe and Cpl. Jay Cicinelli have received letters of intent to terminate, according to CBS Los Angeles.
Thomas died five days after officers confronted him while responding to reports that a homeless man was looking into parked cars at a transit center.
Video of the incident shows police pin him down until he goes quiet and is taken away by medics.
The coroner determined the death was caused by facial injuries and compression of his chest that made breathing difficult and deprived his brain of oxygen.
Ramos and Cincinelli have been on leave without pay for several months, and Wolfe is still being paid pending an internal hearing. The officers will be fired if they do not respond to the letters of intent within 10 days.
Attorneys for Ramos and Wolfe said they are still deciding how they will proceed.
